Vietnam: Where to Go
Though it will always be remembered in the west for the events that happened there during the war with the United States, Vietnam is now beginning to be discovered by tourists and gap year students looking for something a little different. This is no surprise, as there is plenty to be done, seen and experienced in a country rich with culture and history. But which places should be at the top of any potential visitor’s list?
Hanoi: The capital and a lively city, Hanoi is not to be missed. With lakes to relax by, pagodas to admire and the local beer to be sampled, this is one of the highlights of any Vietnamese holiday. The markets are fascinating, while tourists can also visit the prison, now a museum, where American presidential hopeful John McCain was held during his years as a prisoner of war. Ho Chi Minh can also be visited, embalmed and lying within a great monument.
Halong Bay: Within reach of Hanoi, the bay is one of the wonders of the world. A must-see, three thousand islands rise out of the water and the bay can be explored by boat. Caving is an option, or visitors can choose to lounge around on any number of beaches. Those who want to prolong their stay can spend a night on Cat Ba Island.
Ho Chi Minh City: Formerly Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City has developed into a busy city with plenty to see and do. Museums abound, dealing with both the American war and the personal exploits of Great Uncle Ho. Watch out for the propaganda though! Easily accessible are the extensive rice paddies of the Mekong Delta, where a whole day or more can easily be passed, as well as the fascinating Cu Chi Tunnels. It was from these tunnels that the Vietcong planned and executed their battle with American troops in the region. This cannot be fully appreciated without visiting them: even the one widened for tourists is a tight fit!
Nha Trang: Away from the business of the cities and the very popular tourist spots, Nha Trang allows visitors to relax on beautiful, unspoilt beaches. The seafood is a real highlight here, incredibly fresh and amongst the best in the world. Bike rides are recommended to sample the feel of the place, while it is also great for a bit of shopping: tailors here are about ten times cheaper than back home!
Vietnam has something for everyone, and now is without a doubt the best time to go, before it gets totally discovered and saturated with tourists as other places have. The distinctive culture and the wonderful attitudes of the Vietnamese people make any holiday here an exciting and enjoyable one.
