Cambodia: Where to Go

Western tourists are starting to wake up to the delights that await them in the Far East, and Cambodia has benefited from the increase in the number of tourists visiting the area. Siem Reap: Smaller and less busy than the capital, Siem Reap is still worth a visit. Easily accessible from the town is the Angkor Wat complex, which is perhaps the highlight of the country. Architecturally stunning, it is not to be missed by tourists. But this gateway to the temples is not the only reason to visit Siem Reap. The town is fascinating, and has plenty for a tourist to do and see, from religious sights to authentic Cambodian dance and musical performances. Also within easy reach are the floating villages, where a remarkable way of life can be witnessed from the sanctuary of the boat. Like Phnom Penh, visitors to Siem Reap can sample vibrant nightlife.

Sihanoukville: For those seeking real rest and relaxation on their holiday, the beaches of Sihanoukville are the place to go. Sandy and expansive, they provide a wonderful sanctuary from the bustle of the rest of the country. A boat trip from shore will take you to the unadventurously named Monkey Island for socialising with the inhabitants, and the seafood on this part of the coast is excellent. In terms of nightlife, Monkey Republic has become world-famous.

Takeo: The perfect place to visit in order to see rural Cambodia. Surrounded by rice paddies, raised huts and local wildlife, this is how the majority of the population live. If you’re lucky you may even get the opportunity to help picking some rice or stay with a local family, as the people are typically hospitable.
